General Karaoke Guidelines

  1. Please keep songs to under 5 minutes long to allow the most number of people to participate.

  2. We will have some songs and lyrics available, but to ensure your track is available, bring it either on a burned CD or mp3 player

  3. Songs for open-mike karaoke ('free karaoke') as well as contest karaoke should be from anime, games, Asian, j-pop/rock only.

  4. Songs may be in English, Japanese or other languages provided they are from anime, games or the other categories listed above.

  5. Songs should not include excessive amounts of profanity


Zenkaikon 2008 Karaoke Contest Rules
  1. The Karaoke contest is open to all registered members of Zenkaikon and will take place in the morning of Saturday October 18, 2008 from 10:30AM-12 PM in the main events room (GS1).


  2. Registration for the contest will be open twice:
    A) 4-6:30 PM on Friday October 17
    B) 9AM to 10:00AM on Saturday October 18, 2008

  3. Registration will take place during the free karaoke in the main events room (GS1). Registration is limited to 15; contestants will be randomly selected from all applications if interest exceeds capacity. The final list of contestants will be posted at the Zenkaikon Convention Registration Desk at 10AM on Saturday, October 18.


  4. All contestants are asked to attend the contest preparation session, which will be during the free karaoke on Saturday, October 18. At this time, they will each have the opportunity to provide us with CDs if necessary, and ask any questions they may have about the process. Contestants are encouraged to come in for sign ups on time to ensure their slot in the contest.


  5. When selecting your song, please show up as early as you can. A song can only be performed no more than three times.


  6. Depending on the entries, there will be separate divisions for Juniors (13 and under), Solo (1 person), and Duets/groups (2+ people). If there aren’t enough entries, all contestants will be grouped into one division.


  7. Each contestant will be asked to come on stage when called, and will sing the song they selected. Their performance will be scored by our panel of judges, and and the top 8 (based on # of entries) will go to the finals (directly after the first round). The winners will announced during the masquerade awards ceremony in the evening after the Cosplay Masquerade.


  8. There is no preparation session for the finals. Any finalists not in attendance will have their places filled by other singers, in order of preliminary round scoring.

  9. In the finals, the contestants will have the chance to select a song that has not been used in the contest in its instrumental form as their choice.Contestants may use a song we already have but are encouraged to bring a copy for themselves to be absolutely sure as well.


  10. Of the eight finalists, the top three will be declared the winner.


  11. Prizes will be awarded at the Cosplay Masquerade Awards ceremony on the evening of Saturday, October 18. Prizes will be mailed to winners in absentia.
