Cosplay Chess 2012

Postby gamergirlx » Sat Nov 26, 2011 12:52 pm

Zenkaikon is considering having Cosplay Chess at Zenkaikon 2012 on May 11-12.

We are looking for interested and experienced people to run Cosplay Chess for our next event, and to get a gauge on public interest.

If interested in running Cosplay Chess, please use the website contact form and select "Cosplay" for the Category. Briefly explain your experience running cosplay chess and at which conventions.

If interested in participating in Cosplay Chess, please post in this thread so that we can gauge interest. Remember, we need a certain amount of dedicated participants to sign up and volunteer a portion of their time to take part in this event. Without you, we can't make this event happen.

We're super excited to have the space in 2012 to be able to consider this event, so hopefully we can get a ton of participation via email and forums! :)

We need an experienced person to run it, and we are looking for someone who can do that.

I was in a cosplay chess game. Not sure I'd participate at Z-kon (I would LOVE to but I won't commit to anything until I know for sure I'm going to be able to get there), but let me offer some suggestions:

1. Allow ample time prior to the match for certain things to happen. One, REHEARSAL. Two, take some time at the beginning of the match to introduce the pieces, both to the audience and to each other. The chess game in which I participated in the past was not given time to do either of these things, the result being that most participants and audience members didn't know who half the characters were. Worse, because there was no rehearsal, the black pieces did not realize that the final battle between the Black King and the White Queen had been planned out, and they overran the board and ruined the entire thing.

(This was not the fault of the people running the chess match, incidentally. It was the fault of the people who organized the con and gave the chess match no consideration. If we'd just had some time to practice and go over the basics with everyone, things would have been just fine.)

2. Make sure there is plenty of space for the board, and hold the match in an area where the board will be easily viewed by the audience.

3. Have the moves planned out by people who actually know how to play chess, and make sure that the pieces understand what the moves actually mean.

4. Remind the audience that they need to be mostly quiet.

5. If at all possible, provide microphones - if not for the pieces, then at least for the characters calling the moves.

Thank you Lady Norbert for your input. I do know there are at least 4 different ways human chess can be played. We will leave that up to the actual coordinators of the cosplay chess event at Zenkaikon. We plan to work with them to provide what they need and request. We will take your concerns into consideration when working with them.

I've always wanted to try out Cosplay Chess, but never went to a con with it. Sounds like fun though! If this happens, I'll definitely sign up ^^

Hi there,
We currently do not have anyone to run the Cosplay Chess yet, but we are looking for someone to run it who has run it at other conventions. If you know anyone who is available, please forward them the information and tell them to contact us ^^
