Zenkaikon on Tour: Sakura Sunday 2011

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

On Sunday, April 10, Zenkaikon once again hosted the annual Sakura Sunday Cosplay Contest. Despite the slightly chilly, cloudy weather, many cosplayers came out to participate! At the final awards ceremony, on the Main Stage of the festival, a large crowd gathered to admire the costumes and watch as trophies and certificates were handed out. In addition to the usual awards, special certificates were given to categories such as “Most Sporty” and “Cutest Tough Guy.”

Zenkaikon also hosted a festival booth throughout the day, where we educated festival-goers about anime, manga, and Japanese culture. A screen at our booth showed clips of various anime series, and a variety of English and Japanese manga were on display. Our resident Asian ball-jointed doll expert (and Zenkaikon Exhibits Head) Kris, also gave demonstrations of her hobby to interested visitors. Various board games were available for play, and at 2:00pm, we hosted our very first anime and manga swap meet!

A great time was had by all who attended, and we look forward to attending the festival again next year!

Sakura Sunday 2010

Are you missing Zenkaikon already? Are you looking for another chance to hang out with friends you met there?

Good news! We’re happy to announce that Zenkaikon will once again be hosting the cosplay contest at the annual Sakura Sunday event in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. In addition to hosting the contest, we’ll also be presenting education (and fun!) activities at our booth throughout the day.

Sakura Sunday, sponsored by the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP), celebrates the blooming of the sakura (cherry blossom) trees in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. For a requested five dollar donation, attendees can enjoy musical performances, martial arts demonstrations, crafts, vendors, food, and more! It’s a great way to celebrate the coming of Spring. The festival has a full schedule of events lined up on their website. The website also contains details on shuttle buses from Center City Philadelphia, for those who would like to take public transportation.

Below are more details about the activites Zenkaikon will be presenting at the Festival.

2011 Sakura Sunday Cosplay Contest:

Dress up as your favorite anime, manga, or video game characters to participate in the 2011 Sakura Sunday Cosplay Contest! The contest is open to all ages and skill levels. Sign ups and judging will take place at the Zenkaikon booth from 10:30am to 12:45pm. Awards and a cosplay fashion show will take place on the Main Stage of the Festival at 1:15pm.

More detailed judging rules:

  • Contest entries should have designs that originate from anime, manga, and video games. (No original costumes for the contest, please, although feel free to wear whatever you like to Sakura Sunday!)
  • Reference material consisting of character images is highly recommended.
  • Judging will be based on craftsmanship and the ability to recreate the character’s likeness.
  • Any questions about the contest can be sent to our Cosplay Department at

Anime and Manga Swap Meet:

Do you have old anime and manga lying around? Would you like the chance to discover some new series? At 2:30pm, Zenkaikon will be hosting an anime and manga swap meet at its booth! Bring series to trade, and make some new friends. (Please bring licensed items only; no bootlegs or copies please.)

Other Booth Activities:

Visit the Zenkaikon booth to learn more about anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture. Clips of various anime will be played throughout the day, and some tabletop games will be available for play. Our resident Asian ball-jointed-doll expert, Kris, will be available to chat more about her hobby. There may even be a few surprises in store, so please stop by to chat with us!

This weekend is Philcon, an annual sci-fi and fantasy convention run by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society. It’s taking place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, NJ, and Zenkaikon will be there! In addition to running a table (where we’ll be showing videos, handing out flyers, and allowing you to register for Zenkaikon), we’ll also be running a special meet and greet panel on Saturday! Here are the details:

Sat 2:00 PM in Plaza I  (1 hour)

Come join the staff of the Philadelphia-area anime and sci-fi convention, Zenkaikon (, and the Delaware Anime Society, as we meet, greet and chat live and in the flesh at Philcon 2010! Zenkaikon is one of the fastest growing anime conventions in the Philadelphia-area and is located at the Valley Forge Convention Center. The D.A.S. has monthly meetings at two locations in Delaware (Dover & Wilmington) and one location in Willow Grove, PA. Zenkaikon on Tour: Inochicon 2010

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Hello everyone! Here is another update from “Zenkaikon on Tour.”

At the end of August, we attended Inochicon, a new convention at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. We had a lot of fun! Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth. It was great to have the opportunity to chat with so many past and future Zenkaikon attendees. We also got to hang out with past Zenkaikon guests Uncle Yo and Reni Mimura, and past Zenkaikon press attendees from Vidgle (who also provided many of the videos airing at our booth).

Many cosplayers posed for photos in front of our table, which we’ve posted after the jump. Don’t forget to comment if you see yourself. Inochicon, thanks for having us, and congratulations on a successful first event!
